The Kamusi Project

Testing Kamusi for Mobile Devices

We have been developing a Java for Mobile devices (J2ME) application for searching through PALDO data (the multilingual next generation of Kamusi). The application can be downloaded at http://pm.suuch.com:8080/kmobile/ to a mobile device and tested. Alternatively, you can use an emulator that is available at http://www.microemu.org/microemu-webstart/index.html or specifically, the webstart application http://www.microemu.org/microemu-webstart/demo.jnlp

We need your help to test the application on as many different mobile devices as possible.

The following observations/issues came up during test runs:

1. The Sun Java Wireless Toolkit emulator runs the application well
2. Microemulator emulates the application well too.
3. Most Nokia handsets run the application very well
4. Most Sony Ericsson handsets have issues running the code.
5. Blackberry has issues connecting to the internet after a word is typed for lookup

For the technical details, this may be of help:

1. Data is retreived from the PALDO database via a python script.
2. The J2ME application configuration is CLDC 1.1 and MIDP 1.0

The future implementation is to include all other languages. But first steps first.

So where is help needed?
1. The area of immediate interest is we would like a feedback report on how other handsets (Samsung, Motorola etc) perform when they run the application.

Later on,
2. A code fix is needed for the application to work with Sony Ericsson handsets
3. A code fix is needed for the application to work with Blackberry handsets

The source code of the application may be availed to interested parties.

Please send feedback to arthur at kamusi dot org or discuss in the comments section of this blog entry.
