Can any one tell me whether it is possible to learn swahili in Scotland either at a college evening class or through some form of personal tuition? I have been to Tanzania twice and fell in love with the people and the place. Along with my family, we are considering the possibility of working as a full time volunteer in a christian orphanage in Moshi. Thanks for any suggestions and warm greetings fae Bonnie Scotland!

Good on you. Did you search
Good on you. Did you search thoroughly the web? If it's there in Scotland some place, you'll come across it. Mind you, I have to say that I have never stumbled on any site located in Scotland. I say "stumbled" because I haven't actually looked! But you should! If you haven't!
I spent some years in Moshi. You will not need all that much Swahili to get going as you will already know. You obviously will have already been in contact with Kiswahil and you appreciate the amount of English that can be counted upon initially. If you have the time, you should get an ordinary grammar about Kiswahili and go through it. Check this site especially. In that way when you eventually end up in Moshi it will not take you all that time to benefit from Kiswahili as a living everyday medium of expression and communication. Any foundation made at home will be amply rewarded in the field later on. Your time will not be wasted. Hata kidogo.

Kiswahili in Scotland
Habari yako,
Itakuwa nzuri kupata nafasi kuongea na watu wa Kiswahili hapa hapa Scotland. I have been out in Tanzania with Mission Aviation Fellowship in 2003 and 2004 and then again in 2005. I fell in love with the country and have just finished a year teaching there. I am working in Scotland now but would love to return. I suggest you buy a Kiswahili grammer book - you can get this on the Internet or any of the big book shops - try "Teach Yourself Kiswahili" by Joan Russell, also get the dictionary (kamusi). Once you have the learned the foundations try to be with people. In Tanzania I spent almost half my time speaking and listening to Kiswahili - and remember - kuiliza siyo ujinga (to ask is not stupidity). I am lucky that in Glasgow I get the chance to speak with kiswahili speakers at church. Utajua Kiswahili sanifu sana! Ni lazima kufanya mazoezi! Ubarikiwe.
Swahili in Glasgow?
Hi Steven,
I'm a medical student at Glasgow Uni and I'm in the middle of planning my elective in Tanzania with several other students. A few of us are quite keen to learn Swahili.....would your friends be willing to teach basic swahili to us? Or do you know of any language centres in Glasgow which may offer Swahili lessons (I've already tried the University & unfortunately they do not offer this language course).
Also, do Mission Aviation Fellowship allow students to join them on their programmes? I'd be very interested in pursuing this oppertunity if possible.
Thanks for your help!
Debbie
Kiswahil in Scotland
Hi Debbie,
I currently work for Scottish Enterprise based in Glasgow and Kilmarnock doing regeneration projects
Mission Aviation Fellowship has a web site http://www.maf-uk.org. You can lists of vaccancies from the site. I think it would be also good to give them a call on 0141 332 5222. They could perhaps advise you on how to take forward your aspirations. Also try Mvumi Hospital, near Dodoma.
In terms of learning Kiswahili I had to buy the book and then try it out on some friends. I could not find any classes in Glasgow at all! I will however have a think how we could get my friends to give an overview of Kiswahili to the medics. I will post this on the site.
You can get the Teach Yourself Swahili Book from Borders Bookshop in Buchanan Street.
